Safer Internet Day 2026 centres on a timely question: how do we make smart choices in a world where technology, and particularly AI, is woven into everyday work?

From drafting emails to analysing data, AI is already shaping how people operate at pace. That creates opportunity, but it also creates new risks, especially when tools feel intuitive enough to trust without question. For L&D teams, Safer Internet Day is a useful moment to reflect on how learning supports safe decision making, digital confidence and responsible use of technology at work.

Because when things go wrong online, it is rarely because people are careless. It is usually because they are busy, under pressure, or even attempting to be helpful.

Cyber Security Is a Human Challenge, Not Just a Tech One

When people imagine cybercrime, they often picture faceless hackers hunched over glowing screens. What they do not picture is a normal working day. A rushed response to an urgent email. A familiar name in the inbox. A quick click made between meetings.

That gap between how we imagine cyber risk and how it plays out matters. Research and industry insight consistently show that attackers rely less on technical brilliance and more on understanding human behaviour. Authority, urgency, and familiarity remain some of the most effective tools in a scammer’s kit.

So, the biggest vulnerabilities sit not in systems, but in environments where people feel rushed, anxious, or unsure whether they can pause and question something that feels off.

This is where learning comes in. Not as a list of rules, but as a way of helping people recognise patterns, slow down decision-making and feel confident challenging something that does not quite add up.

Smart Tech Safe Choices and the AI Question

This year’s Safer Internet Day theme places AI front and centre, asking organisations to think about safe and responsible use rather than blind adoption.

That’s why we chose to talk about how AI is often either overhyped or feared in one of our Live and Learn Podcasts. It’s true, AI can support productivity, personalisation, and insight; we have an AI Learning Coach ourselves! But people should understand AI’s limits, how to make usage ‘human’, and the risks attached to misuse.

The challenge for organisations is not simply introducing AI tools but supporting people to use them thoughtfully. That means knowing when to trust outputs, when to sense check, and when to stop and ask questions. These are judgment skills, not technical ones, which makes them squarely an L&D concern.

Beyond Awareness Behaviour Change That Actually Sticks

Most organisations already tell their people to be careful online. Awareness is not the problem. Behaviour under pressure is.

Phishing attacks, deepfakes and social engineering tactics work precisely because they show up in realistic contexts. They sound plausible. They mimic normal working patterns. And they often land when attention is stretched thin.

This is why behaviour-focused learning matters. When training reflects real organisational culture, real communication styles and real constraints, it helps people practise better judgement rather than memorise policies. It also supports a healthier approach to mistakes, where reporting a near miss is seen as responsible rather than embarrassing.

L&D teams play a critical role here by shaping learning that supports confidence, curiosity, and shared responsibility, rather than fear-driven compliance.

Learning That Reflects Real Workplace Contexts

Effective cybersecurity learning respects how work happens. It recognises that people operate in open cultures, hybrid environments and fast-moving teams. It accounts for transparency, collaboration, and trust, without pretending those things can simply be switched off in the name of security.

This is where strategy matters. Cyber learning should align with organisational values, leadership behaviours and day-to-day realities. It should help people understand why certain habits increase risk and how small behavioural shifts can make a meaningful difference.

When learning is designed this way, it supports more than compliance. It strengthens digital judgement, encourages speaking up and builds cultures where responsibility is shared rather than enforced from the top down.

Safer Internet Day is a reminder that a single policy or course does not create safe digital behaviour. It is built over time, through learning that evolves alongside technology and reflects how people really work.

As AI continues to shape the workplace, the organisations that thrive will be those that invest in understanding, not just tools. Those who support people to make smart choices, question confidently and navigate risk without fear.
