Reserves are profits retained from previous periods. The best place to secure funds is from within the business itself. However, the term ‘reserves’ doesn’t necessarily refer to cash.

Cash Flow Forecast

Effective cash flow is vital for the company’s financial well-being. Having a healthy order book is no good if you haven’t got the cash to buy materials and pay wages today. Keeping a healthy cash balance is critical.

Profit and Loss

Profit is retained in the business for future growth. It pays dividends for shareholders. The tax man takes a cut. Profits allow the business to grow. Breaking even means that the company is not moving forward. You’re either growing, or going. Profits provide the funds for growth.

Working Capital

A business needs working capital, and how quickly it turns over affects profits. A business can’t make money from buildings and machinery alone. It requires materials, fuel, and other consumables to generate revenue. Fixed assets are what the company intends to keep. Overheads are fixed, and involve office salaries, rent, etc. The financial money-go-round recirculates working capital. Keeping the money-go-round moving quickly improves profits.


Accounts are all about money. Any business is a vehicle for making money. It is vital to know the health of the business in the past, present, and future.


Recognise the basic features of a balance sheet, profit and loss account and cash flow forecast. Understand the meaning and purpose of these documents. Understand how a business makes profits and why.
