Overview
What is the difference between 2D (two dimensional) and 3D (three dimensional) thinking? Example of the task 'improving customer service'. 2D thinking: simple, look at your competitors (benchmarking) and copy the good things they do, modifying them as necessary. If we want to come up with some ground breaking ideas, we need to shift into 3D thinking. 3D thinking involves questions like 'What is the essence of the goal?- The answer could be 'to attract and retain customers'. Now we need to think of all situations and solutions that involve attracting and retaining' - feel free to explore any realm. (visual examples include a Venus fly trap, a vacuum cleaner, a magnet picking needles, electrons, wedding rings, black holes) Now think about what ideas do these suggest?
